Ningbo might not be one of China’s best-known cities, but with a long history of its own as well as exposure to Western culture, it’s a real mix of East and West and has lots to offer a foreign teacher resident here.
Ningbo is located in the middle of China’s East coast, just to the South of the Yangtze River delta. It is one of China’s oldest cities, dating back to 4800 BC. Ningbo was a trade city on The Silk Road and then became a major port in both the Tang and Song dynasties.
Western culture has since influenced the city, so today it is a combination of Ancient Chinese and modern Western culture. The mixture of other cultures can be seen in the Old Bund (LaoWai Tan) district of Ningbo, where British and Dutch architecture is evident everywhere. This is now a vibrant hub of restaurants, bars and boutique shops.
There are many places of interest for the teacher living in of Ningbo; Cheng Huang Temple, Tian Yi Square and Raffles, to name but a few. Tianyi Pavilion (Tianyi Ge) is one of Ningbo’s most famous attractions and is near to Moon Lake (Yuehu). Built in 1516, it is thought to be one of the oldest libraries in China and houses displays of old books and ancient tablets. There are many temples in and around Ningbo worth a visit, including Baoguo Temple, Qita Temple and Tianhou Temple.
There’s plenty to do in Ningbo with shopping centres, cinema, theatre and amusement/water parks. It’s easy to get around the city itself, with 2 metro lines in operation and 2 more under construction, while the airport and railway network provide easy access to the surrounding cities of Shanghai, Hangzhou, Wenzhou, Nanjing, Shaoxing and Xiamen. For those wanting to travel and enjoy more of what’s on offer, there’s the beauty of Don Qiang Lake, Zhu Jia Jian Beach and Feng Hua Xi Kou mountains, to name but a few of the surrounding beauty spots.
The subtropical monsoon climate of Ningbo means that you won’t freeze in winter or boil in summer! The average temperature year-round is 16°C with an average low of 5°C in January and highs of 28°C in July.
